In this edition, the festival will program company work, as a celebration of the 5th anniversary, but this is restricted to Kenyan companies due to fiscal and logistical issues. However, we are inviting dancers from the East African states of Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Eastern Congo.

MOTTO:

LOOKING WITHIN: CREATING AN ECONOMY-MOVING DANCE WITHIN AFRICA.

This will the the editions guiding principle, around which dancers will engage one another on, as we dialogue in movement workshops, conference (26/27 October) and performances.

It is informed by the basic need of cultivating and nurturing an East African Dance Network and mobility of dancers from this region. We reckon that this wil stimulate exchange and training, creativity, collaborations, production and ultimately financial freedom.

Consequently, this will put the East African dance on the international network/ map.

HOW?

In tandem with this edition's motto: LOOKING WITHIN, we are/ will be in future inviting dancers from across the African continent, with international networks of their own and based within Africa. The invites are/ will be required to have/ be part of a dance development project/ program, festival/ programmers, that they run, participate in, in their countries of origin.

In lieu to this fact, as a guiding principle, we are inviting dancers from other African countries as follows: Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Congo DRC, South Africa, Mozambique, Cote de Ivoire and Madagascar.

The festival will run for 10 days, with dance workshops and training, lights/technical workshops, outreach, dance conference and performances.

NAIROBI FESTIVAL OF SOLOS AND DUETS: (2007-2010)

Finally the fourth year, marking the fourth edition of the Nairobi festival of solos and duets, a platform celebrating contemporary dance in Kenya and the region is behind us now, but not the new energy and life that it brought to contemporary dance in Nairobi.

Each year we offer technique and performance skills to dancers, while offering our audiences a menu of local and international performances. And the performances did not disappoint, all through the performance venues at the Goethe institut, Alliance Francaise, Kenya National Theatre and The godown arts center, not forgetting Lerustique Resturant and the dance groups in Mathare and Kibera, all was awash with vibrancy of dance taking center stage.

2010 marked two years of DF-N’s  pilot training and development program THE DANCE MONTAGE, launched to develop a future generations of Kenyan dancers and choreographers.

Theme-2010

MULTIPLE LANGUAGES: (exploring dance as communication):

Our dance exchanges and talks were guided by this principle of communication, as we discover and appreciate our diversity in movement and creation of work.

By strengthening grassroots and community dance as a support system to dance development we create a dynamic and spontaneous growth of the art of dance in Kenya and the region at large.

2010’s edition was witness to performances by dancers from the states of the east Africa community of Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. The festival will also witnessed performances from international dance companies from Sweden, Corsica/France, Cyprus and Nigeria.
